The report
Students are asked, within two weeks after all raw images are taken and darks and flats
are available, to write and turn in a two-three page report. In case they obtained images of
more than one object, they are expected to do the processing of each, and write a separate
report on each.
On the following two pages we provide an example. It is a fake: it was created as a
sample only. The actual authors of the image were Sarah Ralph, Danny Warren, Elizabeth
Joseph, and Brianna Pettijohn.
The first page should be a brief presentation of the picture. It is meant for posting on a
wall. It should have a good quality picture inserted (use .png format), provide the basic
information on how the images were taken, on the setup we used, what the object is, and
explain very briefly what the visible details of the image are.
The second page explains what galaxies are in general, and how this objects fits into
their general classification, followed by more detail about what is visible in the picture. A
general evaluation of the image follows, mentioning any unusual image processing steps,
explaining what is good and what is not perfect on the image. A quick explanation for the
cause of each imperfectness is given, in view of guiding future efforts of improvement.
Whenever there is something unusual about the imaged object, it is mentioned and the
source of information is quoted.
Notice that all the numbers in the report were either taken from the “Notes” files, which
detail the data of the setup, or else read off from some of the images the authors took.
Once you have the finished report, please place a copy, in Word .doc format, together
with a copy of your finalized image(s) in .png format, in a folder called Report”, at top
level inside the folder bearing your name on the lab computer. It will be used for grading.
Of course, feel free to take a copy of your image, to print it, use it for postcards, whatever
you like. Don’t hesitate to put your name as “author” on the print!
Caution
It might be tempting to cut-and-past information from the internet. Doing so,
however, constitutes plagiarism, and must be avoided. The text must be the students’
own text, in their own words. It is absolutely essential to avoid writing down anything
that you do not understand. It is very easy for a grader to spot it when that happens,
and it works steeply against the student!
